by William Martin Conway, 1st Baron of Allington (1856–1937)

This watercolor came to us from a collection of works by the multi-talented Sir William Martin Conway, an English artist, art historian, politician, writer, cartographer and mountaineer. He was a significant figure in mountaineering circles, and this piece dates to a period when he was particularly active. The same year he painted this scene in Scotland, he and his team explored the interior of Spitsbergen, Norway, the first expedition to cross the mainland of the island.

Besides passionately climbing mountains, Conway was Professor of Art at the University College, Liverpool from 1884 to 1887, and from 1901 to 1904, he was Slade Professor of Fine Art at Cambridge University.
