French Miniature, c. 1800

$215.00

Painting on ivory wafer, 4 x 4 in. frame

Original ebonized wood frame with brass liner

Found in the South of France, this is a hand painted miniature of a young woman mourning the departure of her love, who we can assume is a solider on the ship seen in the distance. Head in hand, she leans against an anchor as she watches the ship sail away. She wears a gown in the Empire style with a pink silk sash over her shoulder.

The painting retains its original frame and backing paper which bears a hand written inscription that translates: 'Genevieve Bodard, souvenir of her grandmother, Bodard, maiden name Lafu.'

Condition: There is a horizontal hairline crack at top and some minor paint loss, primarily at bottom half. Not observed out of frame.
