Provenance: From a Mattapan, MA estate.
Condition: Areas of minor foxing to edges, paper has slight vertical waves only seen in some lighting.
Amédée Besnus was a leading French painter and etcher of landscapes and animal studies. He first studied in Étampes under Auguste Vassort and later finished his education in Paris, studying under both Alfred Cogniet and Julien Dupre. Besnus visited England in 1859 and was deeply influenced there by the watercolours and etchings of the Norwich artist, John Crome.
His work is held in nurmerous permanent collections worldwide, and editions of the present etching are included the collections of the Harvard Art Museum and the National Gallery of Art in D.C.
