This is a beautifully composed early work by American artist Alexander Clayton. Clayton was born in Maryland and lived in Washington DC, New York City, Los Angeles and Dallas. He attended the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC and continued his training abroad in France, Spain and Portugal.

He exhibited extensively, at art galleries in New York and DC, and notably at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, the Corcoran Gallery, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Phillips Memorial Gallery, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and at the Galeria d’Arte Instanta in Lisbon.

He was most remembered for his portraiture, having received several prominent commissions, painting the likes of Richard Nixon, Pope John XXIII and Helen Keller.

He lived with his partner of nearly 40 years, John Sanders, until his death in 1988.
