Sailor's Navigational Sketch, 19th c.

$225.00

Gaphite and white pastel highlights on light blue/gray paper, 9 3/4 x 13 3/4 in. (frame)

Inscribed "River SF / Center of Breakers SSE"

Antique gilt frame and old glass with recent custom archival matting

Condition: Good with minor crease at left. Antique frame has a small old gilt repair at lower right corner.

This in a very uncommon nautical sketch of a coastal waterway with directional notes in fanciful block lettering, eg. "center of breakers south-south-east.' These navigational artworks most typically can be found as engravings, which would have been printed in books used by ship captains. In additon to the directional note, this drawing notes 'River SF' at lower left. I can't be sure, but I have a suspicion that this could refer to São Francisco River in Brazil, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
