The Goat Herd, c. 1950

$285.00

by Margaret Metcalfe (English, 1877-1972)

watercolor, adhered to board, 21 3/4 x 17 1/8 in.

signed and titled on back

recently framed

I saved this positively stunning watercolor from a pile of loose artworks in England earlier this year. It had likely been unframed for a long time and bears minor surface scuffs and nicks. (see detail photos)

Margaret Metcalfe (British, 1877-1972) was raised in East Sussex, England. She studied art in her youth and ran a small commercial art studio in London. Upon marriage, she moved to Nyasaland (Malawi) in the 1920s with her husband who worked for the Agriculture Department of the Colonial Office. They lived on a small farm in Malawi until moving back to the UK in the early 1960s. Throughout her long life she produced a large and varied body of work, much of it recording the people and landscapes of her beloved African home. She regularly exhibited her work both in Malawi and South Africa.
